UNRWA Demands Independent Probe into Gaza School Bombing
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has urged for a thorough and independent investigation into the Israeli bombing of a school in central Gaza, which served as a shelter for 2,000 displaced persons. This incident marks a grim milestone in the war’s 10th month.
Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, expressed outrage on social media, “Another day. Another month. Another school hit.” He emphasized the need for an independent investigation to ascertain the facts and identify those responsible.
The school bombing resulted in dozens of casualties, adding to the already staggering toll of tens of thousands of Palestinians killed and 1.9 million displaced since the start of the war. UNRWA has lost at least 520 people sheltering in their facilities, with 1,602 injured.
As ceasefire talks resume, the international community presses for a permanent end to the fighting. The UN aid coordination office, OCHA, warns of a dire situation, with daily exchanges of fire across the Blue Line and nearly 97,000 people displaced from southern Lebanon.
Lazzarini reiterates his call for a ceasefire, urging protection and respite for the people of Gaza and Israel, and immediate release of hostages. The UN emphasizes that a political and diplomatic solution is the only viable long-term solution to end the brutal war.
