Omar Ayub Demands Resignation of CEC Raja and ECP Members
In a bold move, Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan has called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja and four other Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) members, citing their controversial decision to deny the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) its iconic election symbol, the bat.
Ayub’s demand comes on the heels of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling, which overturned the ECP’s decision and allowed the PTI to retain its reserved seats for women and minorities. The ruling was a significant victory for the PTI, and Ayub hailed it as a triumph of justice and the supremacy of the law.
“The ECP’s biased interpretation of the law and Constitution has undermined the public mandate,” Ayub asserted, emphasizing that the commission’s actions were a clear violation of Article 6. He demanded immediate resignations, citing the need to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
The PTI leader’s stance was met with a mixed response, with Adviser to Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah questioning the PTI’s claims and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar downplaying the ruling’s impact on the government. However, Ayub remains resolute, insisting that the ECP’s actions have compromised the electoral process and necessitate accountability.
