In a weekend that will be etched in the annals of cinematic history, “Alien: Romulus” emerged victorious, raking in a staggering $41.5 million in its debut weekend. The latest installment in the venerable franchise, which has been thrilling audiences for 45 years, proved to be a force to be reckoned with, dominating the North American box office.

With its impressive haul, “Alien: Romulus” cemented its position as the highest-grossing film of the weekend, playing in 3,885 locations across the United States and Canada. But its success didn’t stop there – the film also conquered international markets, amassing an additional $66.7 million in 49 territories, for a global total of $108.2 million.

The Walt Disney Co., which owns 20th Century Studios, basked in the glory of a one-two punch, with Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” claiming the second spot with a respectable $29 million. This summer, Disney has been the driving force behind a string of hits, including “Inside Out 2” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” accounting for an estimated 42% of the industry’s box office takings.

As the summer draws to a close, the movie business has experienced a welcome resurgence, with a slew of recent successes propelling the late August weekend to a whopping 30% increase over the same period last year. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, noted, “The summer started off pretty gloomy, but it’s winding up really strong… We thought we were going to coast through August, but now we’re powering through August towards a much better overall summer number than we expected for the box office.”
