Lagos:  Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old beauty queen born to a Nigerian father in South Africa, was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria on Saturday. This comes after she withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition due to a backlash over her nationality.

Adetshina faced vicious xenophobic attacks and controversy when she was announced as a Miss South Africa finalist in July. The South African government even investigated a claim that her mother may have stolen the identity of a South African woman.

Despite not having been in Nigeria for 20 years, Adetshina was invited to join the Nigerian contest. She said, “This journey has been tough, but I’m proud and grateful for the love and support.”

First runner-up Paula Ezendu called for an end to xenophobia and tribalism, saying, “We’re all one family. We’re all human beings.”

Adetshina, who will represent Nigeria at the international Miss Universe competition in November, said, “I know we are going to win.” She also expressed her love for South Africa and gratitude for the support she received from the country.

This victory marks a triumphant return for Adetshina after a difficult few weeks, and she is now set to represent Nigeria on the global stage.
