Heatwave Hits Italy, Breaking Records and Claiming Lives

0

A severe heatwave has gripped Italy, pushing temperatures to all-time highs and claiming at least five lives. The southern region of Apulia has been hit the hardest, with four elderly individuals succumbing to the heat on the beach. A fifth victim, a 68-year-old man, died in the streets of Lazio, near Rome, due to a heat-induced heart attack.

Scorching Temperatures and Wildfires

The heatwave has brought temperatures soaring, breaking records across the country. The regions of Lazio, Apulia, Calabria, and Sicily have been ravaged by wildfires, with the Civic Protection Department reporting numerous emergency operations to contain the blazes.

Health Risks and Warnings

The Italian Health Ministry has issued a red alert for 12 cities, indicating a health risk for all individuals, not just the vulnerable. Health authorities in Lazio have extended the red hot-weather warning through July 17. The National Heat Plan, enacted in 2004, provides daily bulletins and heatwave risk forecasts for 27 Italian cities.

Aging Population at Risk

Italy’s aging population is particularly vulnerable to heatwaves. The Health Ministry has taken measures to mitigate the risks, but the situation remains dire. The Italian farmers’ association Coldiretti reports that the first half of 2024 has been the hottest period on record, with temperatures 1.47°C above the historical average.

A Call to Action

As Europe faces more frequent and intense heatwaves, countries must consider new protections for workers and citizens alike. The FenealUil trade union in Italy is calling for paid leave for staff when temperatures exceed 35C. With climate change on the rise, it’s a matter of life and death.
