Local leadership needs to be strengthened for improved disaster response: Speakers
Islamabad : A result validation workshop on the humanitarian partnership landscape in Pakistan emphasized the need to harness the potential of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) to strengthen local leadership at the community level for improved disaster response.
Dr. Shafqat Munir highlighted the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events, underscoring the need to enable local leadership to lead disaster resilience efforts. The report analyzed humanitarian aid by INGOs in previous and recent disasters, indicating a decline in global partners’ response.
Salman Danish presented a research paper, noting climate change impacts have made Pakistan the fifth most vulnerable country. He emphasized the shift in international funding from Pakistan to Africa due to legislative constraints and bureaucratic hurdles.
The panel discussion featured Member National Assembly Farah Naz Akbar, who commended the study and emphasized the need to review humanitarian response mechanisms. She stressed the importance of collaborations and cohesions for resilient partnerships in disaster management and risk reduction.
Experts proposed linking the study with sustainable development goals, introducing a national reference of the Grand Bargain, and highlighting specific recommendations for targeted interventions. The session concluded with a question hour session involving civil society, government, private sector, and media representatives.
