Monsoon rains break 44-year record in Lahore
Lahore: In a stunning turn of events, Lahore, Pakistan’s provincial capital, has been inundated by torrential monsoon rains, shattering a 44-year-old record. A staggering 350 millimeters of rainfall pounded the city in just three hours, leaving widespread devastation in its wake.
FLOODWATERS ENGULF CITY
The unrelenting downpour transformed streets, homes, and major thoroughfares into raging rivers, with iconic areas like Mall Road, Ferozepur Road, Model Town, Faisal Town, Lakshmi Chowk, and Anarkali bearing the brunt of the deluge. Tajpura residents faced the unthinkable as rainwater invaded their homes, while the Services Hospital struggled to cope with the inundation, putting patients and medical staff in a precarious predicament.
POWER OUTAGES PLAGUE CITY
The relentless rain also crippled the city’s power infrastructure, with 288 feeders tripping and plunging vast swathes of Lahore into darkness. The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) appealed for patience as teams battled to restore electricity.
RAINFALL RECORDS SHATTERED
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that the highest rainfall was recorded at Lahore Airport, with a staggering 337 millimeters, followed closely by Pani Wala Talab at 203 millimeters, Lakshmi Chowk at 191 millimeters, Upper Mall at 182 millimeters, Mughalpura at 173 millimeters, Tajpura at 180 millimeters, Nishtar Town at 227 millimeters, and Chowk Nakhuda at 163 millimeters.
MONSOON FURY TO CONTINUE
The PMD warned that the strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are expected to bring torrential rains to upper parts of the country from August 1 to 6, with intermittent breaks. Stay safe, Lahore!
