Monsoon Showers to Hit Pakistan – Heavy Rainfall and Flash Floods Expected
Pakistan, get ready for the monsoon season! The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted heavy rainfall and flash floods in various regions, including Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), and northeastern Balochistan. The downpour is expected to start today, bringing much-needed respite from the scorching heat.
Torrential rains may cause flash floods in AJK, northeastern Balochistan, and the hilly streams of Dera Ghazi Khan within the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, urban flooding is anticipated in the Pothohar region, upper Punjab. Severe rainfall may also trigger landslides in Murree, Galyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, potentially disrupting traffic.
Wind and thunderstorms are expected in several cities, including Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, Attock, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Narowal, Sialkot, Lahore, Layyah, Bhakkar, Taunsa, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Sahiwal, Okara, Khanewal, Bahawalnagar, and Bahawalpur.
Lahore experienced intermittent light and heavy rainfall on Sunday, bringing down the temperature by 12 degrees Celsius. On Monday, the city can expect a mix of sun and clouds, with chances of light to heavy rain at night.
The PMD’s Early Warning System has warned residents of Karachi and other parts of Sindh to prepare for potential thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning from Monday. Karachi can expect rain from July 8 to 10, with temperatures ranging between 37 to 39 degrees Celsius.
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a separate alert, warning of potential floods and glacier bursts in 11 districts. The PDMA has instructed authorities to remain vigilant, as rising temperatures and melting glaciers could lead to flooding.
