In a groundbreaking move, four esteemed Pakistani universities have joined forces with Chinese institutions to revolutionize agricultural technology through the Silk Road Agricultural Education and Research Innovation Alliance. This monumental collaboration aims to foster knowledge sharing, innovation, and mutual growth in the fields of crop development, research, and education.
Unity in Diversity
Quaid-i-Azam University, Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, Sindh Agriculture University, and Ayub Agricultural Research Institute have joined hands with Chinese institutions to:
– Exchange and develop novel food crops, vegetable varieties, and medicinal crops
– Establish demonstration parks for research and innovation
– Introduce cutting-edge technologies like nanobiochar, nutrient solutions, and bio-organic fertilizers
Breakthroughs and Achievements
This alliance has already yielded remarkable results, including:
– Selection of 19 stress-resistant wheat strains
– Identification of a new wheat variety with potential to enhance production, salt stress tolerance, and farmers’ income
– Establishment of model farms for sesame contract farming, boosting Pakistan’s export potential
Global Expansion
The alliance, initiated in 2016, has expanded its membership to 120 institutions from 19 countries, providing Pakistani universities and research institutions with a platform for global partnerships and knowledge sharing.
