Pakistan’s Humanitarian Efforts Laudable, Says PM Shehbaz Sharif
In a heartfelt appeal, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the global community to acknowledge Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to hosting a vast refugee population, predominantly comprising Afghan refugees. This gesture, he emphasized, demands collective responsibility and recognition from the international community.
During a meeting with Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), at the PM House, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to ensuring the protection and safety of vulnerable individuals. He highlighted the socio-economic challenges and security threats faced by Pakistan in this endeavor, underscoring the need for international support.
The prime minister praised the longstanding partnership between Pakistan and UNHCR, acknowledging the agency’s invaluable assistance in hosting Afghan refugees for over four decades. Despite numerous challenges, Pakistan has extended exemplary respect and dignity to these refugees.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sought UNHCR’s support in mobilizing resources to supplement Pakistan’s efforts and urged the promotion of durable solutions for Afghan refugees, including safe return, reintegration, and third-country relocation.
Filippo Grandi expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s generosity and hospitality, assuring continued collaboration to fulfill the basic needs of Afghan refugees. His three-day official visit to Pakistan from July 7-9, 2024, aims to strengthen this partnership.
