Islamabad: Syed Naveed Qamar, a prominent Member of the National Assembly from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), raised a critical issue concerning the diversion of water from the Indus River to the Federal Government’s new project “Green Initiative” aimed at cultivating 4.8 million barren lands in Pakistan. During the NA session today, Hon. Syed Naveed Qamar, alongside other PPP members, highlighted concerns regarding the proposed diversion of water to cultivate barren lands acquired from provincial governments during the caretaker period.

In his address, Syed Naveed Qamar emphasized Pakistan’s status as one of the world’s most water-stressed countries. The Indus River, a vital source of water for the nation, is already operating beyond its capacity to serve its current stakeholders. Qamar expressed apprehension that building new canals from the Indus River, rather than seeking alternative water resources, could worsen the existing crisis.

“This proposed diversion will cause an additional strain on the Indus River, which is already insufficient to meet the needs of its present users like those in Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin, Thatta and Sajawal,” Qamar stated. “Instead of addressing the root causes of our water scarcity and exploring new sources, this approach risks worsening our critical water situation.”

The PPP members in Parliament supported Hon. Syed Naveed Qamar’s stance, advocating for a more sustainable approach to water management. They urge the government to focus on long-term solutions and conservation strategies to mitigate the impacts of water stress in Pakistan.
