Pakistan Information Commission Cracks Down on Scholarship Misuse
In a landmark move, the Pakistan Information Commission (PIC) has ordered the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to take swift action against the misuse of scholarships and breach of public trust. The directive comes in response to a citizen’s appeal for greater accountability and transparency in the use of public funds.
The PIC has demanded a comprehensive list of scholars who received HEC scholarships over the past decade, including those who failed to complete their studies or return to Pakistan. Despite initial resistance from HEC, which cited concerns about individual harassment, the commission has insisted on a full disclosure.
The statistics reveal a staggering 3,001 scholars were awarded HEC scholarships between 2013 and 2023, with 1,126 completing their studies and 1,810 still pursuing their education. However, a troubling 65 scholars failed to complete their programs or return to Pakistan, prompting legal action and efforts to recover government funds.
The PIC has emphasized the need for a specific timeline to finalize these actions, ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of public funds. This move reaffirms the commission’s commitment to upholding the principles of good governance and the Right of Access to Information Act, 2017.
