In a shocking revelation, Engineer Zahoor Sorur, a member of the governing body of the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), revealed that billions of rupees have been embezzled from the council. Addressing an emergency press conference on July 13, Sorur alleged that the PEC, a regulatory body responsible for overseeing the engineering sector in Pakistan, has been misusing funds meant for the development of the sector.

Sorur, a Ph.D. holder and a prominent engineer, revealed that the PEC collects millions of rupees as fees from engineering companies, but instead of utilizing the funds for the betterment of the sector, the money is being squandered on luxurious expenses, including five-star hotel stays, foreign trips, and high-end vehicles. He claimed that each of the 65 governing body members of the PEC receives over Rs. 5 million as TADA (travel allowance) and enjoys other perks, including free fuel and vehicles.

The engineer-turned-whistleblower alleged that the PEC’s finances are not being audited by the Auditor General of Pakistan, but by private auditors, raising questions about the transparency of the process. He appealed to the government to take notice of the embezzlement and ensure that the PEC’s finances are audited by the Auditor General.

Sorur also highlighted the plight of young engineers, who are struggling to find employment despite the country’s dire need for skilled engineers. He urged the government to take steps to address the issues faced by the engineering community, including the lack of job opportunities and the decline in the number of students pursuing engineering degrees.

The expose has sent shockwaves through the engineering community, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations and action against those responsible for the embezzlement.”
